House of Villafranca de Almería
“Ex Deserto, Fortitudo”
Origin: Lords of the Almerian marches after the Reconquista
The Villafranca family rose to prominence as frontier lords granted lands in Almería after the fall of the Nasrid kingdom. They administered vast estates in the Andarax valley.\n\nTheir wealth came from silk production and Mediterranean trade, inheriting the infrastructure left by the Moors. The family fortified several watchtowers along the coast.\n\nBy the 17th century, the devastating 1522 earthquake and economic decline eroded their power, and the line merged with other Andalusian houses through marriage.
