Order of the Holy Sepulchre

A religious order devoted to protecting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Members and commanderies existed in Aragón and Navarre, supporting crusading efforts.

The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem traces its origins to the First Crusade and the liberation of Jerusalem in 1099. Devoted to the protection and support of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — the site believed to contain the tomb of Jesus Christ — the order combined religious devotion with military purpose.

In the Iberian Peninsula, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre established commanderies and churches, particularly in the kingdoms of Aragón and Navarre. The Canons of the Holy Sepulchre maintained important foundations including the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Torres del Río, Navarra, and the priory of Santa Ana in Barcelona.

The order's Iberian presence reflected the deep connections between Spanish crusading culture and the Holy Land. Many Spanish knights took the cross and journeyed to Jerusalem, and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre served as a spiritual bridge between the Reconquista and the broader crusading movement.
