Founded in the 13th century as a naval military order under King Alfonso X of Castile. It was intended to fight Muslim fleets and protect Christian maritime routes.
The Order of Santa María of Spain was a unique and short-lived military order founded around 1272 by King Alfonso X "the Wise" of Castile. Unlike all other Iberian military orders, which focused on land warfare, the Order of Santa María was conceived as a naval military order — perhaps the first of its kind in medieval Europe.
The order was created to combat the growing threat of Muslim naval power in the western Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar. Alfonso X, known for his ambitious vision and intellectual curiosity, recognized that controlling the sea lanes was essential for completing the Reconquista and securing Spain's maritime trade routes.
Despite its innovative concept, the Order of Santa María had a brief existence. The devastating Castilian naval defeat at the Battle of Algeciras in 1278/1279 effectively destroyed the order's military capability, and it was dissolved around 1280. Though short-lived, the order represents a fascinating experiment in medieval military organization and foreshadows Spain's later emergence as one of the world's great naval powers.
