Extremadura
Land of Conquistadors, Realm of the Dehesa
Extremadura—'beyond the Douro River'—is Spain's wild west: a vast, sparsely populated land of rolling dehesas (oak woodlands), Roman ruins, and fortified towns that produced the conquistadors who conquered the Americas. Cortés, Pizarro, and Orellana all came from these harsh, beautiful lands where the frontier spirit was forged.
