Founded in 1158 to defend the fortress of Calatrava against Muslim forces. The order controlled vast territories in central Spain and built many major castles.
The Order of Calatrava was the first military order founded in the Iberian Peninsula, established in 1158 when Cistercian abbot Raymond of Fitero accepted King Sancho III of Castile's challenge to defend the strategically vital fortress of Calatrava against the advancing Almohad threat. Where the Templars had declined this dangerous posting, the Cistercian monks stepped forward.
The order quickly evolved from its monastic origins into one of the most formidable military forces of the Reconquista. Following the Cistercian rule with modifications for military life, the Knights of Calatrava combined strict religious discipline with devastating martial effectiveness. Their distinctive red cross fleury became a symbol of Christian military power across central Spain.
At the height of their power, the Order of Calatrava controlled vast domains across Castilla-La Mancha and parts of Andalucía. Their masterpiece of military architecture, Calatrava la Nueva — built after the great Christian victory at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212 — stands as one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in all of Spain. The order's Grand Masters became some of the most powerful figures in Castilian politics.
