House of Vélez-Blanco
“In Altis Firmitas”
Origin: Viscounts of Vélez who built the famous Renaissance castle
The lords of Vélez-Blanco transformed a Moorish fortress into one of Spain's finest Renaissance castles. Don Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, first Marquis of los Vélez, commissioned Italian artisans.\n\nThe family wielded significant power in eastern Andalucía, controlling trade routes between Murcia and Granada. They were deeply involved in the suppression of the Morisco revolts.\n\nTheir decline came as the marble patio of their castle was sold to foreign collectors in the early 20th century.
