After the reconquest of Tarragona in 1118, the new lords inherited the mantle of ancient Tarraco—capital of Roman Hispania and one of the greatest cities of the ancient world.\n\nThey restored the massive Roman walls, amphitheater, and aqueduct, and their archbishop wielded power rivaling secular lords. The family served as intermediaries between church and crown.\n\nThe extraordinary Roman monuments under their care earned Tarragona UNESCO World Heritage status.
