House of Medina Sidonia (Cádiz branch)
“Mare Nostrum”
Origin: Coastal lords who commanded the tuna almadrabas
A cadet branch of the great Guzmán dynasty, the Medina Sidonia lords of Cádiz controlled the immensely profitable tuna fisheries along the Atlantic coast.\n\nTheir almadrabas tuna traps at Zahara de los Atunes and Conil were among the most valuable assets in Spain. They maintained a private navy to protect their interests.\n\nThe 7th Duke infamously commanded the Spanish Armada in 1588, a role thrust upon him despite his protests of inexperience.
