A cadet branch of the great Fernández de Córdoba dynasty, the Priego branch became immensely wealthy through olive oil production and livestock.\n\nThey transformed Priego de Córdoba into a jewel of Baroque architecture, funding churches, fountains, and public works that rival those of any Spanish city.\n\nThe family's fortunes declined during the War of Spanish Succession when they backed the losing Habsburg claimant.
