House of Azagra (Albarracín)
“Independens Semper”
Origin: Lords of Albarracín, rulers of an independent lordship
The Azagra family created one of medieval Spain's most remarkable anomalies—the independent Lordship of Albarracín, which answered neither to Aragon nor Castile.\n\nFor over a century, they maintained their autonomy through skillful diplomacy, playing the two great kingdoms against each other while fortifying their rose-colored mountain fortress.\n\nThe lordship finally fell to Peter III of Aragon in 1284, but the independent spirit of Albarracín endures to this day.
