Almodóvar del Río Castle stands on a site fortified since Roman times, but the current fortress dates primarily to the 8th century when the Moors built a formidable alcázar to guard the Guadalquivir crossing. After the Christian reconquest by Ferdinand III in 1240, the castle was expanded and modified, receiving its distinctive eight towers during the 14th century. The castle passed through the hands of various noble families and the Spanish crown.
