Hidden in the Subbética mountains between Córdoba and Granada, Zuheros is bypassed by the main highways and remains a secret known mainly to hikers and olive oil connoisseurs.
History
The name Zuheros may derive from the Arabic 'sujaira' meaning rocky place. The castle was built in the 9th century as a watchtower and expanded by the Nasrids. The Cueva de los Murciélagos was inhabited during the Neolithic period and contains remarkable cave paintings and archaeological remains dating back over 6,000 years.
