Pedraza

A walled medieval village with a single gate, where the entire town is lit by candles on two summer nights each year during the Conciertos de las Velas (Candle Concerts). Its castle once held the sons of King Francis I of France hostage.

History

Pedraza is a remarkably preserved medieval walled village, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, embodying the essence of Castile. Its prosperity originated in the wool trade and livestock farming during the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The village's most distinctive feature is its single gate, the Puerta de la Villa, which traditionally closed at night, isolating the inhabitants and contributing to its defense and unique character. This strict control over access has undoubtedly helped preserve its medieval charm.

The village's central Plaza Mayor, surrounded by arcaded buildings, is one of the most beautiful in Spain. Its aristocratic past is evident in the noble houses adorned with coats of arms. Pedraza is particularly famous for its 'Noche de las Velas' (Night of the Candles), an event held in July where the entire village is lit by thousands of candles, creating an ethereal and unforgettable atmosphere, further cementing its romantic and historical allure.

How to get there

From Segovia, take SG-20 then SG-P-2222 towards Pedraza. Continue on SG-P-2222 directly to the village (approximately 40 km, 40 minutes).
