A fishing village clinging vertically to the cliffs of Cape Ogoño on the Basque coast. The streets are so steep that the village bus must use a turntable to reverse direction at the bottom.
Overlooked in favor of nearby Bermeo and the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage, Elantxobe receives almost no tourists despite its dramatic cliff setting.
History
Elantxobe is a unique fishing village dramatically clinging to the steep cliffs of Cape Ogoño in the Basque Country. Its origins as a fishing port date back to the medieval period, with its strategic location offering both protection from the elements and access to rich fishing grounds. The village's peculiar vertical layout, with houses stacked one above the other and narrow, winding streets, is a direct result of its challenging topography.
The village developed around its small, sheltered harbor, which provided the livelihood for generations of fishermen. Its isolated nature meant that traditional Basque customs and architecture were well-preserved. Historically, the church and bell tower were built at the highest point, while the port and fishermen's houses occupied the lower areas. This stark vertical division necessitated a unique urban plan, with residents often navigating through staircases rather than flat streets.
