From the witches' cave at Zugarramurdi to the fairy-tale palace of Olite, explore the medieval Kingdom of Navarre — a buffer state between three civilizations at the foot of the Pyrenees.

The medieval Kingdom of Navarre was a fascinating anomaly — a small, strategically vital state wedged between the Crown of Castile, the Crown of Aragón, and the Kingdom of France. For centuries, its kings played the three powers against each other, maintaining independence through diplomacy and the natural defenses of the Pyrenees. The result was a culturally rich kingdom that absorbed influences from all three neighbors while developing its own distinctive identity.

This circuit covers 6 stops from the Pyrenean passes to the Ebro valley, encompassing witch-trial caves, fairy-tale palaces, fortified hilltop sanctuaries, and valleys where Basque traditions persisted throughout the medieval period. The Kingdom of Navarre was the last to be incorporated into the Spanish crown (1512), and its independent spirit remains palpable today.

Stops on this route

  1. Roncevaux Pass (778) — Where Roland fell — the most famous mountain pass in European literature
  2. Ochagavía — Gateway to the Irati Forest — one of Europe's largest beech-fir woodlands
  3. Roncal — Famous smoked cheese valley — the D.O. Roncal is Spain's oldest cheese denomination
  4. Zugarramurdi — Spain's witch trial village — the cave of the 'akelarre' (witches' sabbath)
  5. Olite Castle — Gothic fairy-tale palace of King Charles III — described as the finest in Christendom
  6. Ujué — Fortified hilltop sanctuary — annual romería pilgrimage on the Sunday after St. Mark's Day

Practical information

Pyrenean roads can be challenging in winter — check conditions. Olite Castle is one of Spain's best-restored medieval sites (€3.50 entry). The Irati Forest is best in autumn when the beech trees turn gold. Zugarramurdi's cave is free to enter; the witch museum charges €5. Try Navarrese cuisine: chistorra, pimientos del piquillo, and Roncal cheese.
