House of Pérez de Guzmán
“Fide et fortitudine”
Origin: Kingdom of Castile
A cadet branch of the great Guzmán house, the Pérez de Guzmán family became Counts and Dukes of Olivares. Their most famous member, Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, was the all-powerful valido chief minister of Philip IV who attempted to centralize Spanish governance but whose policies ultimately led to the revolt of Catalonia and Portugal.
