House of Peñafiel
“In Vino Veritas”
Origin: Lords of Peñafiel, masters of the Ribera del Duero
The lords of Peñafiel commanded one of Castile's most iconic castles—a ship-shaped fortress atop a narrow ridge overlooking the confluence of the Duero and Duratón rivers.\n\nThey controlled the emerging wine culture of the Ribera del Duero, and their cellars were among the earliest in the region. The Infante Don Juan Manuel, greatest medieval Spanish writer, held the lordship.\n\nTheir castle served as both fortress and literary salon, where some of Castile's finest medieval literature was composed.
