The lords of Orgaz achieved immortality through El Greco's masterpiece "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz," considered one of the greatest paintings in Western art.\n\nDon Gonzalo Ruiz de Toledo, lord of Orgaz, was known for his extraordinary piety and charity. Legend says Saints Augustine and Stephen descended from heaven to bury him.\n\nThe family controlled territories south of Toledo and were noted for their tolerance toward Toledo's Jewish and Mudéjar communities.
