The Dukes of Feria were the preeminent noble family of southern Extremadura, commanding from their imposing fortress atop a hill overlooking the town.\n\nThey served as governors and military commanders in Portugal, the Netherlands, and Italy. The 5th Duke was the last Spanish ambassador to Elizabethan England.\n\nThe family was deeply involved in the colonization of the Americas, with many Extremaduran conquistadors coming from their territories.
