Origin: Lords of Alquézar, keepers of the canyon fortress

The lords of Alquézar maintained one of Aragon's most spectacular fortress-collegiate churches, perched above the dramatic Vero river canyon.\n\nOriginally a Moorish stronghold al-qasr , the family transformed it into a Christian fortress and pilgrimage site. The Romanesque cloister contains remarkable carved capitals.\n\nThey controlled access to the Sierra de Guara canyons and administered the growing pilgrimage traffic through their territory.
